Rui holds a PhD in Marine Sciences with specialization in Marine Ecology by the University of the Azores. Post-doctoral Fellow with the Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre (Portugal), investigating several aspects of cetacean ecology and the role of these predators in the ecosystems they integrate, in the scope of diverse national and international R&D projects. His recent research has focused on developing innovative ways of obtaining and combining environmental, social and physiological data from marine animals, with special emphasis on cetaceans. He is member of the ICES Working Group on Marine Mammal Ecology.
His expertise in marine mammals will be fundamental in the study of trophic relationships between macro- and mega-fauna in the research area.
